About

avatar-smallAs you may have guessed from the url, my name is Rudy. Born in 1956. Masters degree in electronics. Retired.

Welcome at this website / blog. It contains info on the model railway hobby project I’m working on. Who knows some of the info may be helpful to fellow model train hobbyists, or to those who consider picking up this hobby.

The railway hobby to me is more about electronics and (micro) computer control than about being protypical or to have the nicest scenery. A lot of info can be found here on the use of Arduino as a DCC decoder or S88 interface and on Freiwald Traincontroller software for PC layout control.

I also played around with model railroad software simulation. Quite a few videos on Eisenbahn-X, SCARM and Trainz can be found on my Youtube Channel.

I’m member of the Eindhovense Modelbouwvereniging EMV.

Forums I follow and where I sometimes post:

Have fun, Rudy.

  1. Hi Rudy,
Just wanted to indicate my thumbs up for your fab TC videos. I my self is, well quite “old” in the model train hobby world, but brandnew in the Traincontroller universe (bronze – so far). Here your videoes are extremely helpful in moving on with all the “devils” details. Looking forward to watch much more.

    Many regards

  2. Hallo Rudy,

  3. Hello Rudy, i like your video’s al lot and wondered if it is an idea to create an Arrival Terminal with the Arduino and control the Terminal by Traincontroller, so it will display the time the next train will arrive into the station.
Like they also do in Minitur Wunderland:

    • Yes, for certain, using an OLED display and an Arduino it will be possible to create such a panel, where the messages can change based on signals coming from Traincontroller. I lack the time to start such project right now, but who knows some day …

  4. Dear Rudi,

First, echoing other contributors in your blog, thank you VERY MUCH for the various TC Videos that you have posted. They are truly excellent and often more helpful than the manual itself ! There is one problem that I have been grappling with for some time, cannot find the exact answer in your videos (or indeed anywhere else) and was wondering whether you had any advice for me ….

I’ve been using TC8.0 Gold for a couple of years now for a 00 layout that can run 10-15 trains at once. Eight trains sit in 4 storage sidings, 2 in each and each ‘pair’ shares a schedule – so four schedules run all these 8 trains. Once one is dispatched from storage and starts its run around the layout, the second one in the shared siding is triggered by a flagman to move up to the starting position, and then after a delay, that one is launched too – on the same schedule that the first train in that pair is using.

This all works very well and has been a lot of fun to get right. Each schedule is NORMAL but with various routes in certain areas, they eventually cover all the possible options – except one. I have an open-able gate with a bridge and when it’s closed, a block/contact indictor detects this and unlocks additional routes (not normally available) over the gate and bridge. However, this addition could leave the train running in a closed loop such that the schedule never gets closer to its end. Therefore, all the routes over the bridge/gate are never chosen by any of the shared schedules in Traincontroller.

OK – no problem. I created short schedules that can run from an entry block in the main schedule(s), over the bridge/gate, and then re-join the main schedule on the other side. Then, following your excellent videos, I created a counter and flagman to trigger on every third approach to the bridge/gate and send the train over this feature. After many struggles I got this to work and even (with no start delays) start and end seamlessly for every third train.

THE PROBLEM – The only way I can make a train “available” for the short bridging schedule is to first kill the main schedule it’s on, and then call the bridging schedule – BUT this kills EVERY instance of the schedule and so stops the other train in the ‘pair’ – wherever it is. How do I only stop the schedule for the train about to go over the bridge ??

I learned from you (thank you again) how to use the COMBI function in the various conditions, but once it comes to the OPERATIONS part, in either the schedule or its calling flagman (or a macro inside the flagman), I cannot use any function that I can find to just kill one particular instance of the schedule and leave the other one running.

I have tried under Train operations to “Terminate schedule” – it does nothing. Similarly I’ve tried “Select Object” but that’s just a screen thing (Inspector) and doesn’t do anything in Operations. Finally, assuming that I do have the second train on the same main schedule, I stop the schedule with the grey icon in the only 3 choices one has, and then start it again after a micro delay. This drives TC Gold crazy and it will usually crash or hang!

At this point, I admit defeat and am reaching out for some help!

If you have the time, I’d be grateful for some advice and of course, should you be interested, I can send you more information if I have been a bit unclear.

Thank you Rudi, for any help that you can be.

    Martin

  7. Hi Rudy, I use train controller 9 and having difficulties with the following action:
A train enters a main line station and stops at the buffer OK, uncouples and a shunter enters to pick up the train and remove it. all ok so far. The loco in the station reverses out and turns around again ok
Shunter pushes the train back into the station ok uncouples and leaves, when the loco drives back it does not stop but tries to push to its original stop.. can you help. Regards Stuart (Australia)

    • G’day Rudy,

      Well where to start?

Firstly I think, with a huge thank you for your excellent contribution to the world through this blog and of course your videos.
Very professional and easily understood at any level.
I take my hat off to you thank you again.

I stumbled across your site by accident very recently and am so very glad I did.

I am also retired and have just begun to get into the model railway hobby.
I have an electronics and computing background and intend, now, to head down a very similar path to you.

I was struggling with the huge amount of information currently available.
You have clarified all of this for me in a clear and concise way.

Thank you and please keep sharing your views and projects.

I just need to get cracking now and build it!

The grandchildren and I can hardly wait.

( I noted that in the course of building your layout, you opted for reed switches for block detection.
Now that your layout has matured a little, have they presented any maintenance issues to date?)

      • Thanks for your kind feedback. Have fun building your layout. About the reeds … no troubles at all and no maintenance at all. I would choose reeds over current detection any time, cause of their ease of wiring, flexibility and reliability.

  8. A big thank you for the great videos, they are such a help and so clearly explained and have helped me enormously in setting up some of the more complicated things. One question if I may, due to illness last year I didn’t update my v8.G2 Gold to v9 and now wonder whether it is worth the extra cost especially as there seems to be a few problems as highlighted on the TC forum, your views would be most welcome.

      • Hi Rudy,
Thanks for the reply. I purchased T.P. thinking that it would go with T.C. and make life very easy & show me at a glance what settings were within the decoder.. On reflection I think I could have saved some considerable money. Onw question you may be able to answer , is. In your No. 16 TC video , Engine Speed profiling, When you go into the setting crawl speed , forward and reverse and any other settings in that sequence. Does T.C. set those settings in the train decoder or ore they just set in the T.C. programme ? . Hope you understand what I am trying to say.

      • No Jim, TC does not set CV values, I use my Command Station to program CV’s. First CV 3 and 4, acceleration and deceleration, are set to 0 or 1. Then I tune CV2 to get a reliable crawl speed, set a visually pleasing top speed with CV 5 and lastly I set CV 6 in the middle of CV 2 and 5.

      • Rudy, your You Tube videos on TC are excellent sold me on buying it! Herr Freiwald is fortunate to have your information out there! Like Jim, I too bought TP thinking it would synch w TC and all would be nice and easy. Like Jim, not the case. And there are few if any informational sites like yours to help. Yes, there is the forum on Freiwald but it is really hard to parse down all that is there to get to what one is looking for.

Jim, I have finally figured out how to see what the decoder has in it, how to program a 2 digit and four digit address and even work with the speed steps. There are many steps and set ups not in the instructions but can be figured out. I am by no means an expert now but am willing to share what I know. I do not want to take up Rudy’s space here and I do not know how we connect. Rudy…any thoughts?

Thanks again, Rudy…your videos are really educational and helpful!

    • Hans, go into edit mode, then click somewhere on your switchboard to make it the active window, then go to menu ‘View’, select switchboard, then customize. Somewhere in one of the tabs there must be an option to show block names (I’m not behind a PC can’t look it up to precisely point to it right now).

    • In TC that is rather simple … just drag one loc onto another in the trains list while holding the ALT button pressed and you have a double traction. Take care that either they have a speed profile that is nearly similar else one will be pulling / pushing the other. Better … use the proper CV values in one loc to disable traction control, which will make it more ‘lenient’.

I am very interest in Video 36 – dealing with Reed switches and especially your discovery of using switches to set flags. I have watched the video 5 times – but I just cannot see how exactly to set up the flags via switches in the software. Do you have a step by step video of write up those describes this process please?

    • Simply add the switch in the flagman ‘trigger’ tab. The switch is sort of a workaround for the fact that a flagman has no mamory, the switch is used as a toggle, a one bit memory, switched on by the sensor and switched off when the stop position is reached.

Silver of Gold.
Of is twee separate schermen beter.
Wat het aantal contacten per bolk aangaat. Ik heb er nu drie/blok. En ik heb twee schaduwstations van 7 sporen.
Is in totaal 42 terugmeldcontacten (aan massa). Per module 16 aansluiten is dis 3 modules.

  30. Great work on these videos …I have referred them to fellow club members as an added way of understanding our club software ( Railroad and Company Gold) . I am working on profiling engines. I am anxious to try you suggestions and see if we might be able to do some automated running. One question comes to mind, if a train is running i=on a schedule under control of the computer, how do I assure this train will slow under Yellow signals and stop with a Red signal ?. Again thank you for all your hard work !! Vielen Dank !! ( My German is not so good)

    • In every block you define a brake- and a stop marker as shown in one of the earliest videos. Trains that run automatic under TC control will be stopped when needed auromatically, either because it was a scheduled stop, or because the route ahead is reserved by another train. Trains can also slow down in the prefious block, there is a video on that too.

  31. A little more advanced, like looking one or two blocks ahead for a yellow. I have a 2 track layout with 2 way traffic that has 2 scissor crossovers. I just cant get those signals to programed correctly.

  34. Hallo Rudy,

Alvast veel dank & keep up the good work!

  38. Hallo Rudy,

    even voorstellen:
    http://www.spoor-g-club.com/

    Groet Rob Brouwer

  39. Rudy, your website and Traincontroller videos are amazing. I used Traincontroller a few years ago and just started a new layout last month. I have learned so much about Traincontroller that I didn’t know before. Thank you!

The only bit of constructive criticism that I would offer is that it is more than a little confusing when you start using functions that are in the gold version of the program and I can only afford the bronze addition. It would be helpful if your videos would point out when you are using the advanced functions.

    • Hi David, thanks for your feedback. I understand your point. It would however be too much work to me to figure out exactly if a certain function, or detail of a function, is available in Bronze, or Silver, or not. It would also clutter and confuse the video’s too much if with every point it would have to be mentioned in which versions it (partly) works. I hope you can understand why this is left out, even though I realize it is an important issue.

  40. Hello Rudy
I a very avid reader of your website I have followed many of your blogs and video,s
to be quite honest i would have not to be able to get the full potential of my ECoS without your Video,s

So i need your help to identify a FLEISCHMANN 96-8122-K Carriage DWA a 2 floors DOUBLE DECKER DB scale -n
There are a good many of these units for sale on the ebay site’s
As i don’t understand European trains setups i have managed to work out that there are 2 driver/trailer carriages
with a couple of centre carriages
As these units have no engine is it possible that you find out what Loco’s are used to move these carriages
I know i am pushing out the boat in asking Rudy you’re the only Person i know that might be able to help me
    Thanks
    for all your support

  41. Dag Rudy,

  43. Hi Rudd,

Before I read your comment on shooting up churches I downloaded TC Bronze haven’t really had a play with it yet but I’ve still got 29 days left. I am very impressed with the quality and detail of your presentations and have a high regard for your opinions. I look forward to your TC tutorials and would like to offer any assistance i can in relation to relevant input (on the rare occasion I might have some).

I am in a similar position to you in that I am retired and after having recently moved from one end of the end of the country to the other have just started building my layout. Unlike you I have no electronics background and would have to describe myself as a bit of a techtard.

TC have suggested to start with bronze work up to Gold. Can you offer any suggestions.

Look forward to hearing from you. Bedankt.

    Cheers

  44. G’day Rudd,

I recently stumbled across your YouTube channel and enjoyed very much all you have explained about ecos and other programs. Interestingly, I was looking for train control and became interested in TC. Then I found your video on it. I have had win digipet but find that it’s not that user friendly. Have you had any experience with It?

I operate ecos2 and Z21, fleischmann H0 profi and all esu digital components. I was very impressed with your VNC tutorial and now run ecos from my pc. Many thanks.

I am building a relatively large layout and look forward to more of your excellent tutorials.

Thanks again and keep up the excellent work.

    Kind regards

    • Hi Peter. I have not tried WinDigiPet yet. Decided to go for TC first. A series of video’s on working with TC is in the making, the first ones will probably be published any day now. A large layout should not be a problem for TC. It helps to reduce PC load if you keep your switchboard layout as compact as possible.

  45. Hallo Ruud,

    Bedankt !!

    Groet Hans

      • Thanks for the feedback Eric. There are no plans to create the video’s also in Dutch. I hope that also without literally understanding what is being said, it still is possible to follow the mouse clicks and see which menu’s were used and what needed to be entered to get things working.
