Traincontroller 32: Start Schedules With Start / Destination Switches

In some cases it can be nice to start Schedules by operating a switch at the start block, followed by a second switch at the destination block.

This can be accomplished via Autotrain, or when using our own defined Schedules.

The video shows how to set up both options.

  1. Hi Rudy,
Despite knowing about this feature you posted some time ago, and having thought about using this technique to choose routes using a single PB press for Start and another for Destination, I have not attempted to actually setup on my TC layout until today (been very busy with the scenery of my layout for a few months).

I understand how to use single PBs to go from a single start block to another Destination block and vice versa (I think), however some of my blocks (also like your demo layout e.g. W2 can go to E2 or E1) can go to several destination blocks? As you have not created a schedule for W2 to E1 only W2 to E2, I am unsure whether it is not possible to cater for this scenario using only one PB at the start block, or whether I am to use another PB to assign the other Destination block in the Schedule’s properties box?

    • Hi Alf … when using switches to start a Schedule. in the Schedule Properties ‘Start- Dest’ tab it is perfectly ok to have Schedules with more than on start block and/or more than one destination block. If this was your question?

      • Thanks Rudy, your response to my query on having a single PB for each block on my switchboard has got me thinking? If I want to achieve a situation whereby I press a button at the start block and then another at the destination block this will fire-up whichever schedule you have assigned to the start field – as I have now set it up it does not take any notice of destination block, this is merely to reset both PBs, and the loco sets off immediately I press the 1st PB (Start) and goes to the destination block setup in the schedule’s properties box. At the moment I have simply added multiple buttons to each block to represent all possible routes to my other blocks one block to one block (some have 6+ buttons now!), and setup schedules as you did in video no. 32. When I gave the example of your layout perhaps it would help me to get my head around things if you could explain how you would setup things if you wanted to get a train from your W2 to E1 by first pressing the PB in block W2 followed by PB in E1? i.e. the scenario being one start block with 2 possible destinations (E1 or E2)?………………………excuse me if I am being a bit thick (slow) here and may have missed the point altogether, I know what I want to achieve but am finding it hard to get across :o)……..

      • Hi Alf,

When you would use switches in stead of push buttons, you’d only need one switch per block.

In the Schedule properties ‘Start/Dest’ tab you can specify which two switches should be activated, in the Rules you can even specify the proper order (Start first, Destination last) … then this Schedule will start.

  2. Hello Rudy. Thank You very much for continuing the great videos of learning to use Train Controller. It has really been a great help to me, much better than reading the handbook.
I have one question, which is, why using a switch at the destination block, when we already have the route made in the shedual ? I mean the train has got its stopmarker in the destination block.

    • Yes Niels, it’s very well possible to start a Schedule with one switch. It’s just that in a situation where you can go from one station with x tracks to another station with y tracks that it can be convenient to have a switch for the start and for the destination blocks.

      • True, when you use just one schedule with x start and y destination blocks, then you need only one switch to start that schedule. But you don’t have control over which train starts and which block it drives to. When you want block to block control, with 2 switches, then you first need to create multiple schedules. From 1 to 1, 1 to 2, 1 to 3, 2 to 1 … etcetera.
