Traincontroller 39: Guide Trains to Specific Blocks

Often we would like trains to enter a station at a certain track, for instance passenger trains should always use track 1 first, cargo trains always go to track 2.

We could use a multitude of Schedules, one for every train (group) … but we could also use just one schedule and add some conditions in the blocks.

This video shows three scenarios that all use just one schedule with multiple destination blocks.

  1. Trains drive into the station always at lane 1 first, then 2, then 3, etc.
  2. Specific trains drive into specific lanes. Which could be done with the ‘Train’ tab of the blocks, but just for fun we use Traindescriptions and a lil TC Route/Schedule trick.
  3. Passenger trains always drive into lane 1 and go to lane 2 only if 1 is occupied. Cargo trains the other way around.

  1. Hi rudy

I try and explain as best as I can, if you have a block that is not connected to any track in traincontroller how do you get the dispactcher to recognise it as a route.

What I’m trying to achieve is one block that applies to a yard exit line where the operator drags the appropriate train to the dispatch block. The reason I’m doing this as I have no room to put the actual block in the track layout

    • Andy, a block that ‘hangs loose’ does not have any routes to and from, it can never be reached by the Dispatcher. If you have TC Gold … you never run out of space to draw your layout … you can create a second switchboard and use connectors to have trains drive from one to the other switchboard, they act together as one larger layout. Or have you already tried to change the icon size? With size 16 a quite large layout may still fit on one screen.

      • Rudy thanks for the reply, you have given me an idea in that if you have just some straight track with a block in it and connectors at each end would that not work.

I will see if I can redesign that particular secetion as the design is a work in progress

  2. Hello Rudy. Another great video to add to this fantastic series on the use of Train Controller. Whenever I speak to any one who uses Train Controller or is considering buying it, the first thing I say is look at Rudy’s Blog. Just absolutely brilliant!!!!!! One scenario that I had seen was to have a “HOME” schedule. So at the end of a session when you push the “HOME” button all the trains would be sent to their respective start positions regardless of their position on the layout. Would you use the COMBI logic for this scenario as you have done in this video? Regards Bret, Perth, Australia.

    • Hi Bret, thanks for your kind words. In general a ‘HOME’ scenario won’t work well, it depends greatly on your layout and traffic if trains can reach their ‘home’ positions starting at random positions, most often other trains are in the way. Also if schedules would need a successor schedule to reach ‘home’ I would not know a way how to get that done. If it is as simple as letting the trains drive to the eend point of the current schedule they are on, then it will work fine, no matter what logic you use, they will reach it. That is what I always do, put an on/off switch in every schedules condition tab, which means the schedule will not be started again as a successor and trains stop in their destination blocks. If that is also their ‘home’ block, that depends on your layout and how you built your schedules.
